Mermaid Tip: Autumn Facial

Colder and darker days mean it’s time to adjust your skincare routine to the season. The cooler temperatures and more time spent indoors, result in the skin requiring more nourishing and protecting properties from your daily skincare routine. We think the best way to transition into the new season is to have a nourishing facial that treats the skin.

We have put together a wonderful autumn facial you can do at home to give your skin some extra love and care. Make sure you have at least 30 minutes to yourself, so you can fully enjoy this DIY facial, be comfortable and even make yourself a nice cup of tea to enjoy (chamomile or lavender tea is lovely).

1. Cleanse

An oil cleanser is a wonderful option and doesn't strip your skin from it's natural sebum, leaving your skin feeling smooth. Apply the oil all over your face, gently massaging it into the skin. Damp a cloth in warm water and lay cloth over your face, breathe in the gorgeous scent of the oils and then gently wipe oil off. The oils will melt away and remove make-up and dirt and leave your skin feeling super soft. Repeat this step as often as needed until skin looks clean.

2. Exfoliate

Scrub your way to softer skin with a gentle exfoliant. This will remove dead skin cells and reveal softer skin. With the added benefits of Manuka Honey, Sandalwood and Orange Peel our Face Mud is ideal for this step. Manuka Honey nourishes and heals whilst Sandalwood moisturises and Orange Peel gives a boost of Vitamin C. Keep in mind to always be gentle when you exfoliate - only use very little pressure.

If you have very sensitive skin, it's best to leave this step out or instead use a very mild exfoliant. You could also mix a little bit of our clay mask with some water and massage it into your skin in circular motions.

3. Mask

A mask gives your skin time to soak up all the nutrients and benefits all skin types. It's important however, to choose the right mask for your skin type. Below we have listed masking ideas according to skin type:

Mallow Out | Normal, Sensitive & Dry skin

A soothing and calming clay masque designed for sensitive, dry or irritated skin. Hibiscus, Marshmallow and Oats Powder gently cleanse and hydrate, revealing soft beautiful skin.

Green Genie | Combination, Oily & Acne-prone skin

This green, purifying clay mask is made with French Green Clay and antioxidant-rich Green Tea, plus toning and balancing Lavender and Sweet Orange peel. Perfect for oily, combination & acne-prone skin.

Face Mud | Oily & Acne-prone skin

To use as a mask simply apply Face Mud in a thicker layer than you would during cleansing. It's potent bio-actives nourish and hydrate, whilst deeply cleansing skin.

Apply your chosen mask and relax. You can also place two cooled tea bags on your eyelids during this step (green or black tea). This will gently get rid of puffy eyes or dark circles and boost the skin around your eyes.

4. Tone

After washing off your face mask with lukewarm water, splash your face with some cold water to close pores. You can also use a cloth to help remove the mask - just make sure to not rub your skin too much. Then apply a toner to help seal in moisture. A floral hydrosol is best and try to avoid products that include alcohol as this may cause irritations (especially if you have sensitive or dry skin). Our Whole Lotta Rosie Toner is a mild, gentle blend of rose, neroli and cucumber hydrosols to calm, freshen and hydrate skin.

5. Massage

Choose your favourite face oil and give yourself a mini face massage. Apply the oil to skin still moist from your chosen toner, as this helps lock in moisture by allowing the oils to penetrate deeper layers of the skin. A facial massage improves the absorption of oils in the skin and will leave your skin feeling nourished and wrinkle free in the long-term. It will also encourage the removal of toxins, as well as give you a healthy glow.

Make sure you use gentle outward and upward strokes. Don't pull your skin, instead use tapping motions around sensitive areas, such as the eyes.

6. Moisturise

In the colder months your skin may benefit from a face balm or another layer of facial oil. Using another layer of moisturiser helps seal in more moisture and keep your skin well hydrated. Apply your second moisturiser only after the first one has had a few minutes to sink in.

Enjoy and GLOW!
