Q&A by Liberty Green.
Liberty Green is an Australian green skincare & make-up blog owned by Kelsey. She has a true passion for green beauty and loves educating others on how to live a greener life.
We were thrilled to answer some questions for Kelsey about Mermaid Cove Organics. You can also find the interview online at Liberty Green.
I'm excited to introduce another beautiful new organic & natural skincare store in Australia, Mermaid Cove Organics. With a focus on small-batch, handcrafted products and brands, and with an overall beachy, mermaid feel to the shop, you'll fall instantly in love. I interviewed Sara, the owner and founder of Mermaid Cove Organics to get to know her, and the brand a little more.
I absolutely love the relaxed, beachy vibe of the branding for Mermaid Cove Organics. Could you tell me a little more about the inspiration behind it?
I have always been in love with the ocean. As a child, I spent lots of time at the sea and even lived on a ship for a few years. For me the ocean is the ultimate place for relaxation & contemplation and I wanted to bring this vibe to our beauty online shop.
I find skincare is about so much more than simply achieving great-looking skin - it’s about connecting with yourself and taking time out each day to take care of yourself. I feel the beach & ocean prompts you to remember what is most important.
Have you always been into organic beauty & an organic lifestyle? If not, what prompted the change?
My mum has always been a believer in natural skincare and would often use ingredients she had in her kitchen to care for her skin (e.g. olive oil, castor oil). As a teenager, I was into commercial skincare brands but quickly realised that all that sparkles isn’t gold and started appreciating the beauty that lies in simple, natural ingredients.
I gradually went organic in all the other areas of my life too. It’s been an ongoing journey learning to navigate around all the “green-marketing” out there, especially when it comes to beauty, but the time spent researching has so been worth it.
I truly believe that a natural and simple lifestyle is best for our wellbeing and health and with Mermaid Cove Organics we want to inspire others to learn more about natural skincare.
What is your favourite line or product that you carry at Mermaid Cove?
From the Black Robin skincare range, it would be the Mallow Out Clay Mask - it’s so calming for my skin and smells delicious! I have been especially enjoying mixing my clay mask differently each time depending on what my skin needs. If my skin is in need of some extra hydration, I'll add a few drops of the Oil You Need is Love face oil to the mask mixture. For a boost of freshness, I like to add some of the Whole Lotta Rosie toner - it helps clear my skin and has a cooling effect.
Another favourite is the Sea Salt Soap in Orange Blossom from the brand Kopa Kauai (launching very soon in our shop!). Kopa Kauai soaps are hand-made in Kauai, my favourite Hawaiian island, and apart from smelling divine they are nourishing and super hydrating for my skin. I replaced my shower gel with the Sea Salt soap and have never looked back since.
What do you look for in the brands/products Mermaid Cove Organics carries?
All the products we stock are 100% natural and sustainably packaged. We look for brands that align with our values: ethical sourcing, organic & natural ingredients, recyclable or compostable packaging and a passion for healthy skin.
Brands don’t necessarily need to be certified organic as I know that certification can be a pricey process and not affordable for smaller brands. Instead, I focus my attention of understanding the raw ingredients & where these are sourced from. With that in mind, we make informed decisions (to decide) if a brand will fit our store.
What is your favourite part about owning a green beauty store?
Connecting with others that share the same passion has been amazing! We have met some wonderful people (customers and suppliers alike!) and truly enjoy being able to inspire and learn from each other.
I’m very passionate about sharing natural, small-batch & lovingly handmade products with our customers and it’s great giving small, niche brands exposure.
Any plans for the future or exciting news you can share?
We will be launching the wonderful range of Kopa Kauai soaps very soon and I’m very excited about that! We’re sure our customers will love these.
Also, we got engaged recently and will be getting married late next year.
